Recreation CalendarThe Recreation Commission meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Council Chambers at Village Hall and the public is invited to attend. Members of the Commission are made up of one resident in each of our 5 village Wards.
The Recreation Commission consists of six Oakwood residents, five of whom are appointed by the Mayor for a term of five years. One of the members is a member of Council who is appointed by the President of Council for a term of one year, ending December 31st of the year appointed. The Mayor’s appointments shall consist of residents from each of the Village’s five Wards. The Commission provides advice and assistance to the Recreation Director with respect to prospective programs or activities deemed necessary to carry out the purposes of the Department of Recreation. The Commission also recommends a budget for the Recreation Department to the Mayor and Village Council and also makes recommendations concerning the fees to be charged to participants in recreational programming. (Oakwood Charter – Section 10.05; Chapter 139 of the codified ordinances)
For further information about the functions and jurisdiction of the Recreation Commission, see Charter – Section 10.05 and Chapter 139 of the codified ordinances of the Village of Oakwood or call Brenda Taylor at 440-232-9988
The Recreation Commission offers a wide variety of activities that meet the needs of all residents (seniors, adults, teens, youth and children). The Commission publishes a quarterly newsletter highlighting upcoming activities such as: Disney-on-Ice, Home and Garde Show, Adult Cardio Kick-Boxing sessions, Private Bowling and Skating parties, Martial Arts, Line Dancing, Open Gym at Carylwood Intermediate School, Easter Egg Hunt, IX Amusement Park, WWF Wrestling and Tobogganing. During the summer months, we attend Cleveland Indians games.
The Recreation Commission offers a summer recreation program that far exceeds that of other communities. This program runs six to eight weeks and includes daily activities such as: swimming, Science Museum, Inventure Place, hiking, bowling, movies, Hales Farm and Village, Fun Days at the Community Park, Metroparks Zoo and Rainforest, Nautral History Museum, Geauga Lake, canoeing and golfing. We continually strive to improve the program.
Membership is needed to participate in the above Recreational Activities. Any resident may apply at the Recreation office to receive their photo membership card.
